We are excited to change up our monthly Coffee and Connect just a little this October! Along with being hosted by a member at a local small business, we will be hearing from Erin Steigleder - Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation’s Education Manager.  Erin will be sharing the mission of VBCF and also bringing awareness to their advocacy efforts. You'll walk away with valuable information, including signs and symptoms of breast cancer in women and men, what you can do to reduce your risk, and what VBCF does to advocate for people with breast cancer.

This is a fabulous opportunity to get your week ended on a positive note, connect with your NAWBO sisters, and build new friendships.

In solidarity with all the fighters and survivors of breast cancer, we ask you to wear PINK to this event on October 7th.

    About the Speakers

As a board-certified nurse practitioner, Hollie Jones is passionate about providing women the care and concern they deserve. She enjoys educating her patients, encouraging them to play an active role in their health care, and inspiring them to take control of their health choices.

Hollie joined Virginia Physicians for Women in July of 2022 after practicing as a women’s health nurse practitioner in the Richmond area for 12 years. She wanted to work at VPFW not just because it’s a top-rated women’s health practice, but also because it has a family feel. Hollie appreciates that VPFW prioritizes patient care. She loves caring for women of all ages and all stages of life–especially teens. Whether she’s providing preventative care, prenatal or postpartum care, contraceptive counseling, menopause management, or problem care, Hollie takes time to listen and relate to her patients’ needs and answer their questions in ways they understand.

Lauren comes to VPFW from the Women’s Health and Oncology Units at Johnston-Willis Hospital where she worked as a Nurse, Clinical Coordinator, and Assistant Director since graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Shenandoah University in 2010.

Lauren realized from providing years of nursing care on the Women’s Health Unit that this is a specialty that goes deeper than just obstetrics, pap smears and mammograms. Through her work with patients on both the Women’s Health and Oncology Units, and her passion for the health of women at all stages of their lives, Lauren believed that she could do more to help the women she served if she were a Nurse Practitioner. Not only would she be able to provide clinical nursing skills, but also the knowledge, patient education, and counseling that women deserve.

Throughout the month of October we'll be focusing on women's health, and this month's book club is one that you won't want to miss!

We'll be reading books written by female authors, then gather to virtually discuss and share our own insights and related stories. We'll meet for book discussions every 6 weeks or so, and there is no commitment to being part of the club. Simply pop in and participate whenever the book topic or the timing works for you.

This month's read is The Vagina Bible by Dr. Jen Gunter. We are excited to announce that this event is being promoted by NAWBO National and we will be joined by the author herself! Join us for an evening of empowerment and connection, where we will discuss women's wellness and engage in a Q & A session with Dr. Gunter.

    About the Author

Jen Gunter, MD, is an OB/GYN and a pain medicine physician. She has been called Twitter's resident gynecologist, the internet's OB/GYN, and one of the fiercest advocates for women's health. In addition to authoring the widely acclaimed and bestselling The Vagina Bible and The Menopause Manifesto, Jen is a New York Times columnist and hosts the TED produced podcast, Body Stuff With Dr. Jen Gunter as well as the show Jensplaining.  She has devoted her professional life to caring for women and we are thrilled to have her attend our book club session in October!

    About Fine Creek Brewing

Fine Creek Brewing is a small, family-owned farmhouse brewery nestled in rural Powhatan County, established in May of 2017.

They intentionally set out to create a limited production brewery in a setting with open space, fresh air and a sense of place. They cook the food they love to eat and brew the beers they love to drink. They support local farms and producers from fruit growers to grain farmers, from vegetable growers to malt producers. They believe beer is best enjoyed in the place it’s created in the presence of family, friends, and neighbors!
